With the increasing popularity of marathons in India, running is soon becoming a potentially lucrative sport. The Sagroli Sunrise Project, run by an NGO in rural Maharashtra, is encouraging underprivileged talent to take up running professionally - and with some success. Jayshree Boragi, 20, won the women’s half marathon category at the 2010 Mumbai Marathon, and several other runners from the program figured in the top ranks. Jayshree’s goal is now to represent India in the 2016 Olympics.
Amidst an arid landscape of dry river beds and thorny brush, children of all ages train diligently under Coach Maskar, hoping to one day become top-class athletes.
