Hidden away across two high mountain passes, the Rohtang La and Kunzum La, lies the relatively unknown Spiti Valley. Part of the arid Trans-Himalayan region of Himachal Pradesh, Spitian culture is largely Tibetan and mostly Buddhist. Similar in geography to the more popular Ladakh Valley, some say Spiti is what Ladakh was like 25 years ago.
The relative desolation, the distinct culture and the stark landscapes make the villages of the Spiti Valley uniquely fascinating. From the agriculture to the monasteries, every aspect of life in Spiti harkens back to another time.
